Street
Fighter Zero
ストリートファイターZERO
(1995) |

 |
|

Having seemingly pushed their Street
Fighter engine to its absolute limit in
Super Street Fighter II X (1994), Capcom seemed
to be running out of steam by 1995, faced with some
increasingly serious competition. It was nigh time to
get back to the drawing board, and revitalise the name.
So along came 'Zero' - a new beginning for the series
that features a storyline set sometime before Street
Fighter II (1991) but after the events of Street
Fighter (1987) and Final
Fight (1989).
Zero features a cast of characters plucked
from all three of the above, who have to take each other
on in a tournament that remains fundamentally the same
as before - but the gameplay has really shifted up a
gear. Fighting game jargon additions include a 3-level
super bar, air blocking, rolling recoveries, chain combos
and the namesake 'Zero Counter'.
The Zero Counter is a clever reversal technique that
can be done when blocking: it counters the opponent's
attack at the expense of one super bar. It is a great
feature; and when you add it to the 'Chain Combo' system
the game really takes off.
Essentially, you can chain standard strikes together,
in order of strength. For example, WP - MP - HP is a
3-hit combo.
Well, most of the time. Nevertheless it is this really
straightforward system that makes Zero so much
fun for masters and beginners alike - it also gives
the game a tremendous amount of depth.
Speaking of fun, there's also a brilliant 2-player 'Dramatic
Battle' team game on offer similar to that of Garou
Densetsu (1991). Here Ryu and Ken can challenge
Vega together (left). It's downright hilarious - and
although it's almost always over in seconds, good times
are nigh-on guaranteed.
It may have aged a little, yet the first Zero
retains a lot of charm even today, thanks to the one
single thing that is missing from its vastly superior
sequels Zero
2 (1996) and Zero
3 (1998): the smooth-as-silk chain combo system. |

The
PlayStation version of Street
Fighter Zero is nothing
short of superb - some even
argue that it tops the Sega
Saturn port. Surprising, considering
how weak the PS can often
be with 2D games.
Includes a short preview movie
for Biohazard
(1996).

Arriving
a month after the PS version
the Sega Saturn port is a
perfect, flawless and blow-for-blow

This is what the Sega Saturn
was made for, and excels at.
It's still quite cheap, too.

Virgin
Interactive are at the helm
of this brave but somewhat
stupid attempt at converting
Street Fighter Zero
onto the Game Boy Color, releasing
it under the 'Alpha' export
title for some reason.
The end result is beyond pitiful,
but it nevertheless remains
a relatively sought-after
version.
