The
Sega Ages collection is a series of classic game re-issues for the Sega Saturn that lasted from 1996
to 1998. They stand out not only as a great library
of timeless classics, but also as one of the earliest examples
of the 'retro game' trend that is so prevalent today.
Sega's arcade milestones Space
Harrier (1985) and After
Burner (1987) are partially to blame for this: they were so ahead of their time that it wasn't until
1995 that accurate conversions would finally appear, thanks to the Mega Drive's Super 32X upgrade. Both games were
much anticipated and a joy to re-visit, showing healthy signs that there was always a keen audience
for Sega's successes of old. And so, hot on the trail
of the Namco
Museum series (Nov 1995) Sega began their own classic game
retrospective for the Sega Saturn. The 32X versions of Space Harrier and After
Burner were among the first releases of the label.
A steady stream of excellent titles followed, among
which are two slick 'Memorial Selection' compilations. Each volume features a selection of vintage arcade games from Sega's
early days, including Head-On (1979), Monaco
GP (1979), Pengo (1982) and Flicky (1984).
By late 1998 the series (and the Sega Saturn) were running
out of steam, but the AM2 / Yu Suzuki favourites Space
Harrier, Out Run and After Burner
would make another appearance - first hidden away in the depths of Shenmue
(1999) and Shenmue
II (2001) along with a perfect version of Hang-On
(1985). As a little wink to the Sega Ages label, Hang-On comes presented in-game as an item, in a mock-up Sega Saturn case (see below).
The tribute book Yu
Suzuki Game Works Vol.1 (2001) compiles all
4 Shenmue bonus games, and adds Power Drift for a
nice 5-in-1 Dreamcast disc.
After the last release in 1998 the 'Sega Ages' namesake would disappear - only to return in 2003 in the form of the PS2 Sega
Ages 2500 series. |
