Having
already dabbled in the VS fighting genre with Garou
Densetsu (1991), SNK unleashed both Ryūko
no Ken and Garou Densetsu 2 in late 1992 as
flagship titles for their new '100 Mega Shock'
range.
While it could be argued that they are both simple cash-ins on the massive popularity of Street
Fighter II (1991), each game is full of pioneering innovations. Ryūko no Ken is certainly
the more experimental of the two - it features:
- In-depth 'Story Mode' with dialogue between bouts
- 'Spirit' ('Ki') gauge that regulates the
use of special moves
-
Screen zoom when characters are close to each other
- Characters get tired and disfigured
- Bonus games that
affect your character's status
- A 'Super Desperation
Move' (energy is low and 'Ki' full)
Cult classic stuff... It may have aged a little,
but Ryūko no Ken still manages to offer precise and rewarding gameplay. It should also
be commended for trying to do something different instead
of simply copying SFII. What it offers may have distinct
flaws, but there's always something refreshing about
unexplored territory.
Besides - this just isn't SFII. No. This is the Art
of Fighting. It's all about staying cool and scoring
single, crunching blows to the opponent. Combos are
for pansies.

The
very first release in SNK's

one mean-ass stomper of a
game that still packs a potent
punch.
Rats. Let's mix it up.

Superb
comic book adaptation of the
first Ryūko no Ken;
chronicles the exact game
scenario with many interesting
twists.
Amajishi's style takes a little
while to get used to, but
the story and fight scenes
are excellent, ending up as
one of the best manga adaptations
of its era.
Recommended!
Part of the Gamest
Comics collection.
