The
first Real
Bout (1995) was a brilliant game. It was a
smooth, unique, high-powered super re-brood of
the ultimately flawed Garou
Densetsu 3 (1995). SNK did what had to be
done, and the end result was truly masterful.
The overwhelming feeling was that things were
finally coming together in the world of Fatal
Fury. Real Bout was so good in fact,
that even Henry Kissinger was predicting that
there was going to be something special about
Real Bout Special.
And there is: RBS is a phenomenally slick sequel,
that steps up the speed considerably and replaces
the three-line 'sway system' with two distinctive
playfields only. The gameplay now involves fighting,
'swaying', and bashing opponents to and from these
lines, often in mid-combo.
The game is plotless this time (Geese Howard is
dead), but the gameplay feels more solid: each
bout is crisp, accurate, and tense; the background
scenery is a lot more varied than its predecessor,
and there have been many additions to an already
colourful cast - a sum total of 24 different characters
are available for selection, as many as The
King of Fighters '94 (1994). The only major
criticism lies in the fact that basic rush combos
feel very much the same for every character (Tap
- Tap - Forwards C - Back C - Special).
RBS nevertheless presents enough depth and variety
to keep its head in the 4-star zone (but only
just). There's so much going on here in the fun
stakes, and some memorable two-player games to
be had. It might not be as deep and complex as
its predecessor, but it takes a step in a different
direction; one that gives it its individuality,
and the privilege of being remembered as a four-star
fighting game in its own right. |

ARCADE
& NEO GEO - SELECT ‘EX’ CHARACTERS
To choose the 'EX' version of Andy, Tung, Billy or Mary,
place the cursor on the selected character
Hold START, input B - B - C - C - B (Hold) wait for
2 seconds, C (Hold) wait another 2 seconds,
then with all 3 buttons held down (START, B and C) press
either A or D.
NEO GEO (Home only) - GEESE HOWARD and EASY
'EX' CHARACTER SELECTION
Leave the 'Demo' running, and wait for the high score
screen. When it appears, input:
        
   
If it doesn't work at first, keep trying the motion
- if the input is correct you hear Geese say 'Come On'
Geese is now selectable; to pick EX characters simply
hold B+C and then select with A or D. |
