R-Type II
アール・タイプII
(1989)

The flyer reads: "Space was ripped by hatred and desire to counterattack and take revenge". Damn... Was it really? Sounds like a grey day for space, and a very problematic situation.
But not for the R-9. Thanks to the power of the 'Force' it easily blazed its way through the Bydo armada two years ago, and this came as a bit of a disappointment to Bydo upper management. So now they’re counterattacking - to rip hatred, and take revenge.
Irem seem to want revenge, too. Revenge for finding out that the original R-Type (1987) could, after a heavy dose of trial and error, be mastered with a certain amount of comfort. Indeed, as one of the most addictive shooting games of its era (and maybe of all time), R-Type pushed many gamers to spend quite a fair amount of their time getting their heads around the game's perfectly set difficulty level.
But that will not happen here. Not this time. You see, R-Type II might well be the perfect sequel: similar gameplay, new stages, new weapons and an all-new difficulty level - upgraded from 'ridiculous' to 'downright silly'.
You know it. The last two levels are near impossible to finish, especially on the second loop. But wait... Irem were right. What we need is a challenge - an iron gauntlet thrown down at the feet of all those who even vaguely claim to be good at shooting games.
Despite being very similar its predecessor, R-Type II ffeeds even more stress into the formula with a even tougher, darker, and more mechanical course to weave your way through. The game requires perfect memorisation of enemy formations, meticulously strategic use of the 'Force' and of course, some pixel-perfect bullet dodging. You have been warned: you must put a lot of hard work into this cat.
So focus, neck a sharp drink, and good luck to you sir.

If you leave out Super R-Type (1991) and the pisspoor Amiga / Atari ST ports, the Game Boy R-Type II was the only version available of the game for close to ten years.
To make things worse it is a hideously deformed botch-job, that has unfairly become a very valuable collectible.
Some things just don't make sense.

Standard small-siz GB packaging, 1Mbit cartridge, 8-page booklet.
