Hikari Shinwa - Palutena no Kagami
光神話 パルテナの鏡

(1986)

Better known as 'Kid Icarus' outside of Japan, 'Palutena's Mirror' was one of Nintendo's first major productions for the Famicom Disk System, and to all extents matches any of them in the quality stakes: this is pure gaming genius.
The basic setup has a lot in common with Metroid (1986) but follows a far more linear layout this time, with a hefty amount of item management to deal with. Each defeated enemy drops a heart, that when accumulated can serve as currency to purchase extra items and weaponry.
The visuals are charming and full of character, the music is distinctive and warm, and the main character, 'Pit', is a joy to control. The game blends precision shooting and exploration without ever overdoing either one - the end-of-stage castles can be disorientating at times, but otherwise it's go go go.
This a real gem of a game, that besides a minor Game Boy follow-up in 1991 is yet to return in any shape or form, though Pit recently made a guest appearance in Smash Brothers X (2008).
Maybe we will see Pit again someday? Here's to hoping, but then again seeing that the Metroid was dumbed down into nothing more than a daft FPS, maybe this one is best left alone.
