By 1989 Nintendo was synonymous with Mario, while Sega had the young Alex Kidd as a mascot. NEC's PC Engine range was definitely lacking some kind of figurehead
- a loyal and subservient über-soldier
who will not hesitate to take on the opposition and
sort them out at the gates.
Bomberman was already a Famicom icon, so Hudson came up with completely original character: the 'PC Kid' - an oddball hero from some weird and wacky prehistoric
dimension, kitted out with nothing more than a loincloth,
an iron head and a distinctively wry smile.
Distinctive is the word… Hudson's designers delivered
a truly unique hero here, and some very one-off game
mechanics to boot: while the main attack is a head butt, doing in mid-air makes the character spin and float. Diving down head first is also an attack that makes you bounce
off the enemy. You can bounce around and juggle folk all over the
place.
It's great fun: the game's imaginative level designs, zany characters and quirky hidden bonus games make it a great
little adventure worthy of all the attention and spotlight it was bound to attract; and serves as a good prelude to the peak of the series
- the brilliant PC
Genjin 2 (1991).
