Metal Gear Online

22 Dec 2005 (MGS3) 17 July 2008 (MGS4)

'Metal Gear Online' is a multiplayer spin-off of the Metal Gear series, based around online team gameplay.

The first iteration of MGO appeared as a bonus game in the PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence (2005). This edition has since been taken offline, but its architecture lives on in the shape of Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (2006).

The current build of the game appeared as a 'Starter Pack' in Metal Gear Solid 4 (12 June 2008), before getting its own stand-alone release on 17 July 2008.

Using a similar engine to MGS4, the game allows up to 16 players to compete in online battles. At its peak it gathered a user base of over 1 million players; but the servers closed in mid 2012 due to excessive hacking and cheating.
