Despite the controversy surrounding the court case that followed it, the first Fighter's History (1993) was an out-and-out success for Data East - so it was great to see the game return in an all-new update on Neo Geo hardware.
And wow - who could have expected such a polished fighting game for what was only Data East's third Neo Geo release. Fighter's History Dynamite is pure class: lightning speed, super-solid gameplay and a crisp chain combo system make the game an absolute joy to play. Today it rests comfortably as one of the best non-SNK fighting games available for the Neo Geo this side of Breakers (1996).
It's a fantastic title in fact, and not just as yet another quality Neo Geo title, but for fighting games in general. It's true: the game engine is near flawless.
Still played to this day, FHD has slowly gathered a massive cult following and it often seen in arcades, tournaments, and online fighting game groups like GGPO.
It was also the first game to be featured as an 'Insanity DVD' release, a formidable showcase of how deep the gameplay can become in expert hands.

In a sense it's a shame that the series didn't go any further.
