The Princess has been bagged again; and Arthur is going to have pick
up his gear and set off for the 'Demon World Village'
once more, with a jaded eye and a head full of déja-vu.
The follow-up to the excellent Makaimura
(1985) might well be the best sequel ever made. It takes the
same premise and gameplay as its predecessor and spices
things up nicely with a humble sprinkling of new features
and visual flair. Nothing too drastic - just enough
to refresh the formula and let it grow.
The visual overhaul is superb - the distinctive style
of the first game really comes to life here, thanks
to some truly inspired backdrops and character designs.
Every stage glides by like a well-honed cartoon.
The gameplay has also had a crank-up: Arthur can now
shoot upwards, downwards (in mid-jump) and collect a
special 'Gold Armour' that enables new magical
powers. These powers vary according to which weapon you are using, and is activated by holding the
button for a few seconds.
But then, something weird happens. Each magic makes
Arthur invincible for a second - use it wisely and the
game a LOT easier to finish than the first Makaimura.
Indeed, compared to the oceans of tears that were poured
over the original, Daimakaimura only clocks
in as a middle-of-the-road challenge. That did disappoint
a lot of veterans, but then again taking the difficulty
down a step or two might have been the right thing to
do: the original game was ridiculously tough.
You still have to loop the game twice though, but even that
remains a pleasure - the game isn't that big, and when
everything looks and plays this good, who cares?
