Capcom vs SNK 2 Millionaire Fighting 2001
カプコン バーサス エス・エヌ・ケイ2 ミリオネア ファイティング2001
3 Aug 2001

Released a year after the original Capcom vs SNK (2000), CVS2 presents two major amendments to its flawed predecessor: the limited 'Character Ratio' system is dropped in favour of a more flexible points system, and there are now 6 different gameplay 'Grooves' to choose from, each based on a play system by Capcom (C, A, P) and SNK (S, N, K).
The result is a remarkably varied, open-ended and enduring fighting game; quite a feat considering the sheer variety on offer: with a total of 48 playable characters and 6 different 'Grooves' to choose from, something was bound to go wrong.
Yet only a few things did: a select few characters are a little over-powered (Sagat, Blanka, Vega, Balrog), the A-Groove 'Original Combo' mode is by far the best - and then there's the controversial 'Roll Cancel' bug.
Essentially, if you use a 'Roll' based groove, you can cancel the first few frames of a roll with a special move. For example, if you roll with Ryu and immediately input his 'fireball' command, he will roll for one frame before suddenly breaking out of it to do a fireball - this while his body keeps all of the advantages of a roll, and be invincible.
This is clearly a bug, that leads into a ton of outrageous possibilities during a high-level play: Blanka's ball can go through fireballs, Ken's roundhouse kick becomes an unstoppable anti-air... anything goes.
A major issue yes, but somehow it works: the game holds together and the sheer variety on offer somehow manages to out-flood this flaw, and if you steer clear of the usual top-tier team (A-Groove Blanka, Vega, Sakura) there is an absolutely massive amount of material to get your teeth into.

While the Dreamcast and PS2 versions of CVS2 are direct ports of the arcade original, the GameCube and Xbox versions are subtitled 'EO' - they introduce a beginner-friendly GC-ISM 'Easy Operation' mode, in which a few special moves can be set to specific buttons - probably to adapt to the GameCube's awkward controller.
More importantly though, the 'Roll Cancel' has been completely removed. And that, as hard as it is to believe, is where the game went wrong: the 'Roll Cancel' bug is the most controversial aspect of the game yes, but it is also one of the core elements of the 'regulation' gameplay.
As a result of this, CVS2EO is mostly overlooked, despite the beginners mode being a very welcome addition. Fighting games are becoming less and less accessible by the day, and any amount of leeway for those who want to get into the genre can only be a good thing... But sadly the removal of the roll cancel make this version irrelevant in the long term.
