Breakers
came as a bit of a surprise to everyone concerned, mainly
due to the fact that it's quite good. It's very
good in fact.
It almost feels like a third party fighting game like
this shouldn't be such a success. Even when compared to the trailblazing King
of Fighters series Breakers still holds up
as technically tight, choke full of visual flair and
gameplay innovation. No mean feat for second-raters
Visco.
Indeed, the greatest surprise of all is the fact that
such a random company managed to come up with a title
of this quality, especially considering their other
Neo Geo releases. To be fair Andro
Dunos (1992), Puzzle
de Pon (1995) and Neo
Drift Out (1996) are all perfectly decent productions,
but none of them caused that much of a stir.
But then came Breakers - a ridiculously
fast, playable and entertaining fighting game. Its phenomenal
speed, easy chain combos, and ridiculously over-the-top
'Super Moves' hold together so well it almost seems
unfair to be critical.
The game was a reasonable success in the arcades, and
following its home release on Neo Geo ROM and CD Visco,
seemingly in a panic from the game's unexpected success,
almost immediately rushed out a near-identical, arcade-only
update known as Breakers Revenge,
featuring very few changes besides differently coloured
backgrounds, one extra character (Saizo) and a few minor
gameplay tweaks.
Go for it - as obscure 2D fighting games go, this
up there with the best.
