Bomberman
ボンバーマン

Originally developped as a simple showcase for Hudson's BASIC compiler, 'Bomber Man' made his discreet debut in 1983 on a number of home computer formats including the MSX, NEC PC-6001, NEC PC 8801, Sharp MZ-700 and Sharp FM-7. It even made an appearance on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, retitled 'Eric and the Floaters'.
The basic incredients for the recipe are: a small charater trapped in a maze must blast his way to the exit by eliminating blocks and enemies. The original 1983 game is vintage stuff - but very dull. It has a stiff, antiquated 'early computer' feel to it that would've immediately dissapeared into obscurity if it wasn't for what happened next.
The second version of the game, the Famicom Bomberman (1985), saw the hat-wearing hero of the original give way to the now-iconic 'White Bomber' character (left) and the same major gameplay traits were vastly improved upon with multiple power-up icons, different enemies and smoother gameplay.
The Famicom Bomberman was a massive release, a bona fide cult classic of the mid-80s Nintendo boom. Today the game has aged badly, but it still strikes as an interesting stepping stone towards the definitive incarnation of the formula, the PC Engine Bomberman (1990): it introduced the series' trademark 5-player 'Battle Game'.
