Biohazard Series
バイオハザード シリーズ |
| |
|
|
Capcom
took everybody by surprise with Biohazard.
By taking the standard PC-style 'graphical adventure'
formula and blending it with precise and responsive gameplay,
they succeeded in creating an unbelievably potent mix:
a tense, eerie and atmospheric action adventure game
that took the world by storm, and created a whole new
genre unto itself: the 'Survival Horror'.
The original Biohazard
(1996) attracted a phenomenal amount of attention the
world over. The game courted praise and controversy in
equal measure, and sequel Biohazard 2 (1998) saw
the series become one of the most lucrative brands
the industry has ever seen, spawning a near endless
stream of comics, novels, soundtrack CDs, art books, toys,
and three full-length Hollywood feature films.
The series has come full circle. Its creator, Shinji
Mikami, has often stated that Biohazard was
a direct result of his fondness for cult horror cinema,
citing George Romero's Night of the Living Dead
(1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978) as primary
influences. Needless to say, the end product is remarkably
faithful to its source material: exciting, creepy, nonsensical,
and very, very tongue-in-cheek. Original promotional flyers for
Biohazard were deliberate mock-ups of classic horror movie posters (left).
Capcom either timed things perfectly, or were damn lucky: the PlayStation era was the perfect opportunity
to start exploring new ways of merging accurate console
gameplay with traditionally PC-style cinematic environments.
The series has developed and evolved along with the platforms and technologies available over the years, and Capcom have ended up with a sure-fire winner that bore them more financial and critical
fruit than Street
Fighter and Rockman
combined, with over 40 million units sold to date. |

The basic gameplay of the original Biohazard (1996) involves guiding
a 3D character around fixed, single screen backgrounds.
This allows for plenty of high-strung
action, achieved through the use of 'fixed camera
angles'.
The game's phenomenal success saw it released quickly on the Sega Saturn, followed by Biohazard Director's Cut (1997) for the PlayStation, a minor re-issue of the original game notable above all for including a playable demo disc of the upcoming Biohazard 2 (1998). |

The phenomenal Biohazard 3 (1999) is probably the best game of the original series. Fast, exciting and full of action, it also refined the mission-based 'Mercenaries Mode', a staple of the series' long-term appeal. As the PlayStation era drew to a close, the series found itself a new home on the Dreamcast. |

The Dreamcast Biohazard
Code Veronica (2000) was lumbered with the responsibility of bringing the series into full 3D. But while the visuals may have been (slightly) upgraded, the gameplay remains identical. Many felt let down by this; but it truth it was more due to the Dreamcast's failure that the game didn't do that well; not the other way round. |

Released on both Dreamcast and PS2, Code Veronica Kanzenban (2001) fixed a few of the problems present in the original release and marked the exact 5th Anniversary of the series. A massive 5th Anniversary Special Package briefcase also was released to celebrate the occasion. |

The 'Rebirth' campaign began with the announcement that all future Biohazard games were to be released exclusively on the GameCube, starting with a all-new 'Remake' released on the original game's 6th Anniversary.
Featuring a completely redesigned game engine and some truly amazing visuals, the GameCube Biohazard (2002) revitalized the series, building up nicely to the release of prequel Biohazard 0 (2002). |

The Gamecube would also play host to superb versions of Biohazard 2, 3 and Code Veronica Kanzenban; and an all-inclusive Collectors Box (7 Aug 2003) bundle featuring all 5 GameCube games in one tidy box set.
The PlayStation 2 'Outbreak' titles are online team
games designed for use with the PS2 Modem - great fun, but the servers closed long ago. |

The eventual release of Biohazard 4 (2005) would bring an end to the GameCube era. The game was eventually released on multiple platforms, and the fact that the game is superb didn't do series no harm. |

Biohazard
5 (2009) once again brought the series back into the mainstream spotlight. Released across all major platforms, the game was a reasonable success despite being nowhere near as good as part 4. Or 3 for that matter. |

2012 began with the release of Biohazard Revelations (2012), an all-new chapter of the main series for the Nintendo 3DS. Though a welcome return to 'classic' Biohazard action, the fact that it was released on such an unnappealing platform didn't do the game any favours.
This was followed by the mediocre Operation Raccoon City (2012), an ill-fated attempt at tapping in to the mainstream first person / team game market.
'Biohazard Chronicles HD Selection' combines the two Wii light gun games Umbrella Chronicles (2007) and Darkside Chronicles (2010) for the PS3, complete with 'PlayStation Move' support. |

Latest installment Biohazard 6 (2012) follows very much in the footsteps of Biohazard 5 (2009), keeping things very much on track - but it is high time for Capcom to come up with something new now. The series relies way too much on its reputation and established user base, and hasn't made much of an impact since Biohazard 4 (2005).
Who's to say - the upcoming Biohazard Revelations Unveiled Edition will hopefully remind us what 'Survival Horror' is all about. |
