Bizarre
murders have been occurring in the forest surrounding
Racoon City. The 'Bravo
Team' of the Police S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics
and Rescue Squad) is dispatched to investigate the area,
but all contact is lost with them.
‘Alpha Team' is immediately sent out to search
for them; but they only find an empty
helicopter. Suddenly,
they are attacked by fierce wolf-like monsters... Caught
by surprise, the team takes shelter inside
a neighbouring mansion.
From here on in, for either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine,
the mystery unfolds: the mansion’s inhabitants
have seemingly been infected by a strange disease and
become zombies, hungry for human blood. There is no
escape... Roaming packs of mutated dogs hound the mansion's
grounds, and who knows what dark happenings are going
on in the basement.
The heroes split up, and begin exploring the mysterious
building. With monsters hiding in the shadows, limited
ammunition, and no idea of what is really going on,
they must "survive the horror"... |

At
first, Biohazard comes across as an archetypal
PC-style adventure game, very much along the same lines
as Infogrames' Alone in the Dark (1992). But Capcom pushed the envelope
further by making the character a lot more responsive
and the action more instant; while banking heavily
on tension, discomfort and fear. The setting is typical
horror movie fare: enter a ghost house, undead foes
suddenly attack by springing out of cupboards, dogs
come crashing through windows, etc...
Never before had a videogame been so genuinely scary.
The violence and gore are a factor, but despite all
of the scaremongering media outrage that followed its
release, it is in fact remarkably tame when directly
compared to your average horror flick, or even anything
coming out these days.
The eerie environments
and creepy soundtrack are a definite factor, but it is the game architecture
that plays the most critical part in the mix. The game
is full of tight spots caused by a severe lack of ammunition
- it doesn't take long to learn that avoiding the monsters
and keeping a full clip is the secret to success, not
gunning everything in sight.
Biohazard marks a massive landmark in the history
of video gaming. It set the ball rolling for a new 'cinematic'
approach to gaming, that would reach a peak in Konami's
outrageous movie-fest Metal
Gear Solid (1998). The game itself is far from perfect,
yet you tend to forgive the patronising puzzles, low-rent
voice acting and stunning naiveté of the
characters. It is once the initial adjustment is out
of the way that Biohazard eventually becomes
an interesting experience: it certainly becomes a lot more
fun and action-packed when you know what to do and where
you're going.
The game became a massive success all around the world;
where it was retitled 'Resident Evil', and cautiously
censored to keep the US-led anti-game violence witch-hunt
quiet. The ensuing series finally allowed Capcom to
slowly move away from their arcade heritage, and begin
cementing their reputation as a quality 'home' producer. |

Released 18 months after the original Biohazard, the 'Director's Cut' edition (25 Sep 1997) includes both the 'Original' game and an all-new 'Arrange' variant that shuffles around the items and throws in a few extra detail here and there.
In truth, the main appeal of this release (at the time) was the bonus demo disc of the upcoming Biohazard 2 (29 Jan 1998).
The 2nd re-issue, Biohazard
Director's Cut Dual Shock Ver. (6 Aug 1998) gets a special mention for replacing the Biohazard 2 demo with an exclusive 'Biohazard Complete Disc' (left) featuring tons of bonus content, movies and memory card data files for both Biohazard and Biohazard 2. |

To
celebrate Biohazard's 10th anniversary, Capcom
re-release the 1996 PlayStation original
in for the Nintendo DS.
Biohazard Deadly Silence (19 Jan 2006) features
an all-new 'Rebirth' mode that throws in a couple
of original touch-screen puzzles here and there,
and some rather pointless first-person knife
scenes that involve randomly scratching away at
the screen with a plastic pen. The game itself remains exactly the
same as the PS original - which is a good thing
- but you can't help but feel that this kind of action
is much better suited to the big screen. |
