One of four launch titles for the Neo
Geo arcade hardware, Baseball
Stars Professional was almost certainly commissioned to tap into the massive stateside success of Baseball
Star (1989).
A colourful, dynamic and entertaining baseball game, it injected a welcome touch of comedy into the rather glum Neo Geo launch lineup (NAM-1975, Magician Lord) and served as an efficient, mainstream-friendly
showcase of the machine's powerful capabilities.
The game
keeps the same basic template as its predecessor, but spices things up considerably by throwing in comical
character designs, a jazzy soundtrack and a tongue-in-cheek
'live' announcer full of hilarious comments
about the players / game / weather. The visuals are good, but it's the audio that is a real high point here - for a 1990 release this was nothing short of breathtaking.
The game's fast pace, in-your-face
presentation and quirky gameplay create a really enjoyable atmosphere, and as a 2-player game it can be downright hilarious.
It went on to become an icon of the Neo Geo era, inspiring two sequels: 2020 Super Baseball (1991) and Baseball Stars 2 (1992).
