time lucky: after the Famicom Baseball
Star (1989) and the Neo Geo based Baseball
Stars Professional (1990) and 2020
Super Baseball (1991), SNK finally come up
with the perfect arcade-style baseball game.
Here the arcade-style baseball genre is tweaked to perfection: the larger-than-life characters,
fast & hectic pace and generous hitting
ratio guarantee tense and high-scoring games. The party-like atmosphere and zany audio make for a great atmosphere.
Especially 2-player, where strategy, skill and
luck are all necessary in equal measure. 2P games
are almost always hilarious for
both experts and novices alike, because the batting engine is superbly responsive:
either player can get a lucky home run at any
time and get back in the game, no matter how bleak
the situation.
The pitching control is vastly improved too, but
over-using curve and swing now tires your pitcher
even more rapidly, and the opponent can maximise upon this
by using a 'Power Up' option, that sees the chosen
batter yield a massive oversized bat: one clean
hit and it's outta here.
The entire SNK baseball saga comes to a climax
here, ending up as what might well be the best
arcade-style baseball game ever devised.
