Released
quite early in the Mega Drive's life, Assault Suit
Leynos was a discreet third-party title
by NCS that remained mostly unknown outside of Japan
and the import market. It did get a limited
U.S. release under the title 'Target Earth', but even
that went mostly unnoticed.
And that is a crime, because Leynos is an absolutely superb
action / shooting game featuring meticulous gameplay,
varied
stages and a difficulty level will keep even the most hardened player on
their toes.
This game won't give up easily. Like it or not, you're locked
in a tense battle against a ruthless invading
armada and an ever-recurring 'Game Over' screen. It's a tough one, but practice does bring its rewards.
It will forever remain a mystery why this wasn't given a more widespread release. It was probably considered 'too difficult' for the mainstream market, but it really would have
done well. The Super Famicom Assault
Suits Valken (1992) was showered with praise when released
internationally (as 'Cybernator'), while the direct sequel Assault
Suit Leynos 2 (1997) has since become a Sega Saturn classic.
An under-rated classic of the MD's early library that only seems to get better with age.

Despite
some slightly grinding music
this is one hell of an arcade
action game, not for
the faint of heart.
Standard MD case, 4Mbit cartridge,
colour booklet. |
