The Nintendo 64 'Apocalypse'
was the Akumajo Dracula series' very first attempt
at 3D - and that alone is the most poisoned of chalices.
For 13 years the series had been firmly set in the 2D realm; and the inevitable move into 3D was always going to be problematic. But in all truth, Mokushiroku is far from being
the disaster so many make it out to
be. If anything it is a valiant (but flawed) attempt
at exploring what 3D has to offer.
This is a Nintendo 64 game after all, and considering
how few good action games there are on the format this is a perfectly respectable effort; whose qualities (eerie atmosphere, superb
music, linear arcade style gameplay) easily outweigh its faults (awkward camera, dragged-out
stages).
It's not a bad game, far from it. Those who believe
it is have rarely played it for that long, while those
who have agree that it does have its fair share of good moments. It's a different direction, for which you
must shed all preconceptions.
It might even be a success
of sorts - it still plays quite well, and many of its ideas would be even better implemented in the superior Akumajō
Dracula Mokushiroku Gaiden (1999).
Seriously
- give it a try. The jury is still out.
