The 6th chapter of the Akumajo
Dracula Series series moves away from the the exploration structure of Dracula
II (1987) and presents a back-to-basics action game, directly inspired by the original Akumajo Dracula (1986).
In fact it's almost exactly the same as the original, except that everything has been overhauled: the quest
is larger and far more varied (thanks to the
inclusion of multiple routes and a password system) and there are now three bonus characters to discover along the way.
The main course layout is split
into two main routes, along which these potential team-mates are being held captive. After rescuing one you can select them anytime during play by pressing the SELECT button.
You can only take one at at time though - this gives way
to 4 different endings, depending on who you
have with you when it's all over. Make your choice wisely: each one has different attributes, and you cannot change again during the dreaded second loop.
In terms of the Akumajo Dracula series, this might well be as good as it gets. The backdrops are dark and heady,
the soundtrack eerie and thumping, and the level design is
nothing short of superb. The series' trademark gameplay
has been tweaked to perfection here; the sheer variety of the course and perfectly balanced difficulty come together perfectly, ending up as one of the finest action platform games of its generation.
Try the second loop for maximum kicks. It's nothing but a filthy, twisted
and masochistic assembly of deceitful traps and nasty
surprises. But hey, everything will be fine. You are,
after all, a man of the cloth.
