Capcom struck gold with their sequel to 1942
(1984). The game's pace, structure and gameplay are nigh-on perfect.
This time the assault is no longer limited to the air:
during some levels your P-38 will suddenly dive down
to sea level, and take on enemy battleships
and aircraft carriers. The level count has been reduced from 1942's
excessive 32 to a more humane 16, and the classic '3 lives' setup has been replaced by a slowly decreasing energy
tank. A screen-clearing smart bomb can be triggered
in exchange for a small energy fee.
The power-up system has also had a severe makeover,
mimicking that of Side
Arms (1986): choose from a multitude of weaponry
and energy boosts by strategically shooting POW
icons until they change to the item you need.
This feature ends up as the core element of the gameplay: successfully
selecting, leaving, then picking up the exact item you
want while negotiating swarms of oncoming
enemies is a lot trickier than it sounds.
Capcom took a great formula
and took it to the next level: the gameplay is impeccably paced and riddled with tricks and secrets... The
music is also worth a mention: 1943's main theme is one of the most
memorable video game anthems of its era.
The arcade 1943 remains one of the
best games that 1987 has to offer; a fierce and
savage rush that went far in enhancing Capcom's
already established reputation as one of the best
game developers in town.

Famicom version
Subtitled 'The Battle of Valhalla', the Famicom 1943 is a fast and surprisingly
well produced title, that despite losing the 2P mode adds quite a few interesting
features over its arcade parent.
The game starts
off with a curious upgrade menu that lets you
customize the abilities of your P-38 - these stats
can be increased throughout the game by picking
up hidden icons, then 'saved' thanks to a five-digit password system.
It's a solid challenge: it you don't find these upgrades the later stages become near impossible to negotiate. The level count
has also gone up to 24 - and the latter stages whip up an excellent shooting experience; one of the best the Famicom has to offer.
Also of note is a new
'blast laser', a chargeable sub-weapon that
will later feature prominently in 1941
Counter Attack (1990).
Final password (Mission 23): T Y 2 N U |
