10-Yard Fight is a very early American Football arcade game, fondly remembered for its simple approach to a notoriously complex sport.
All you have to do is make it up to the opponent's end zone and score a single touchdown before the timer runs out. There is no dee-fensive
play, offensive formations are chosen automatically
and ten seconds are added to the clock for every ten
yards cleared.
A good trick is to pass the ball left or right after the snap and wait for an opening in the opponent’s
pack. When you see it, whack that button - the ball will
rocket across the field like a missile in a slick diagonal cruise that your target man will never fail
to receive... It’s a great buzz when it works,
but there is no room for mistakes: interceptions are
punished by a 20 yard penalty.
The
game was an out-and-out success for Irem, and it still retains a lot of charm despite its age. A 2-player
version known as Vs 10-Yard Fight was released in 1984, followed by
two (rather crude) home conversions: first on Famicom (1985) then on MSX (1986). Nintendo would later recycle the
Famicom version as a launch title for the NES in 1987.
Bad move: the game had aged badly by then,
and the mainstream American public is notoriously fussy
about the accuracy and 'realism' of their sports games.
As a result of this 10-Yard Fight has a very
poor reputation stateside - it is sneered at, jeered
even, as "that lousy football game that came with
the Nintendo".
This is wrong. 10-Yard Fight was never meant
to be an accurate simulator - it is a deliberately straightforward 1983 arcade game, and quite a good one at that.
Goes to show - the original arcade game was ceremoniously re-released
in 1996 on Sega Saturn and PlayStation,
in the aptly named Irem Arcade Classics.

- but this is a damn hard
item to find in good condition.
